Blood Midge Fly Tying Instructions
The Blood Midge is a great fly for winter trout fishing. Trout love red from some reason and they regularly respond to flies with red in them. Blood Midges exist in every river and lake. In lakes they are called Chironomids. In rivers they are much smaller and thinner. Blood Midges are usually very small. Common sizes are #18-24. Blood Midges are only red in their larva form.
Once they begin to turn into an adult, they lose their red coloring. You can see how red the actual Blood Midges are to the right. This is why such bright midge tubing is used to imitate the Blood Midge. The segmentation is also important. This is another reason the midge tubing works so well. The tubing actually imitates the segmentation very well. The Blood Midges will also naturally want to curl. This is why I like to use the curved hook. It adds a little bit of implied movement.
