This weekend, I had the pleasure of spending time on “The Meadows” section of the North Fork of the South Platte River. “The Meadows” is a private section of river just outside of Denver. It is quite possibly, the closest section of river to Denver, where large world class Rainbow Trout can be caught. Only about 1 hour from Denver, “The Meadows” is a 2 mile section of river, which you can have all to yourself! The Meadows section of the North Fork is a medium sized and very intimate section of river, which can be fished from either side and crossed in many areas. The river is full of Rainbows ranging from 15″- 28″ in length, with many of them being in the 20-23″ range. The Meadows also hosts a few Brown and Brook Trout, but the majority of the fish are large and fat Rainbows.
This weekend we where able to catch fish all sorts of ways. The majority of fish where taken nymphing Rubberlegs, Pheasant Tails, San Juan Worms and Prince Nymphs. Although, the streamer fishing was also incredible. Black Streamers with a White Streamer trailing behind the Black one, was very effective and took many of the larger fish later in the day. Dry fly season is not quite here yet, but we did manage to get some fish on dry flies (Amy’s Ants). “The Meadows” section of the river has a large variety of water; including pocket water, large plunge pools and a canyon section in the upper river.
If you would like to take a Guided Fly Fishing Trip, have 2 miles of river all to yourself and travel about an hour from Denver; then you need to give Mile High Angler a call!
“The Meadows” section of the North Fork can be booked through Chris Wells at Mile High Angler.
As of today, Chris still has available days over the 4th of July weekend! But they will not last long!
