Blood Midge

The Blood Midge is a great fly for winter trout fishing. Trout love red from some reason and they regularly respond to flies with red in them. Blood Midges exist in every river and lake. In lakes they are called Chironomids. In rivers they are much smaller and are just plain midges. Blood Midges are usually very small. Common sizes are #18-24. Blood Midges are only red in their larva form. Once they begin to turn into an adult, they lose their red coloring.
